Math is an exciting curricular area, and there will be many varied opportunities to participate. This year we will be using the Modular that are on Engage NY. This year will be a challenging year since students will start to think differently about math and dive deeper into the topics. They will also be expected to think critically about what they are learning. I encourage all parents to routinely visit the Engage NY website at: http://www.engageny.org/common-core-curriculum. By looking at the modules you will be able to see what we are doing in Math class and be able to support your child at home.
What a typical Math Period looks like:
1. Sprint/Fluency Practice Activity.
2. Whole Group Modeling I will model to the class the skill that they will work on.
3. Guided Practice. At this point, students will either work in small groups with the assistance of a teacher or work with a partner while the teachers circulate and monitor.
4. Independent Practice
Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday based on the skill for the day. There will be some days that they will be able to complete their homework quickly while other days it may take longer.
